It got me thinking about the conversations I've had this week with other women and business owners. While I understand the history and primitive nature behind the holiday, I do find it funny that a rodent meteorologist forecasts our future and decides our fate for the following six weeks. Something we choose to believe.
Before I dismiss it, I ask myself: Is there a groundhog in my own life I let decide my fate?
If it sounds next to impossible that a groundhog can tell us if there will be six more weeks of winter, why do we let other people tell us how our own futures will play out?
The truth is, no one can tell us how our own successes will manifest. The only indicator of that is our own actions - the hard work we put in day after day to create the futures we're dreaming of. I am aware of the rodent meteorologist's predictions, but I choose not to let that dictate the future, much like I'm also not going to let anyone else either.
Do you have any groundhogs in your life? How much credit do you give what they have to say? Do you pay attention to them or do you create your own path forward?
CEO State of Mind
Throwback to the weekend that kicked off the six month elevation of our minds and businesses.
I knew it was going to push me, but I didn’t expect to shed many tears and feel stretched far beyond my comfort zone. Like the furthest - ever.
The first day was incredibly overwhelming. I was sitting in a room of 26 women, who are amongst the most successful I know. These women are some of the highest producing women in their respective companies, and not one time was there sense or feeling of competition - only growing and collaboration.
It felt empowering because it was empowering. What I found was that when you, as the CEO of your business, step into that role, it is a completely different mindset because scaling six and seven figure businesses is no joke and requires a much higher version of you.
I have invested in myself and my business before “I should” so I can help business partners do their first steps very clearly and peacefully.
There is no better time than the present to start something new.
There is no better time than the present to get out of your comfort zone.
There is no better time to start than now to build a sustainable business for yourself and future.

Let Gratitude Move You Forward
Gratitude and negative thoughts cannot co-exist because as what you focus on grows.
The effects of practicing gratitude are not immediate, but over time, consciously practicing gratitude every day can help neural pathways strengthen and create a permanent grateful + positive nature within ourselves.
Instead of doubting yourself, start celebrating your achievements. It's easy to spiral into all that you haven't done, all that you aren't, all that you (fill in the blank).
What if you jotted down all that you HAVE achieved?
It's actually something I do when I start focusing on the gap between where I am and where I aspire to be.
And then I get emotional because when I look at how far I have come in many aspects of my life, it is in that that I see my progress. My growth.
I am also reminded I am a work in progress. We all are.
Gratitude will help move you forward in 2022 - and every year that is to come.
Dry Air = Dry Hair
Dry air = Dry hair!
BUT WAIT! That’s not the end of the sad winter hair story. TLC for your tresses goes a long way during those dry winter months.
Here are a few of my winter hair secrets. (Be sure to catch all my posts for more tips)
1) Hair masques. I had never used them until three years ago, but they are a game changer - especially during the dry months. My favorite is one that replenishes + hydrates dry/over-processed hair, which eliminates frizz and reduces split ends.
2) Refrain from washing your hair daily. I know I know, but I promise it’s worth it. Over-washing strips hair of its natural oils that keep hair moisturized + hydrated. Plus, second day texture is ahhh-mazing!
3) Regular hair trims. This goes for all year round and is worth the investment.
4) Buy a humidifier. Indoor heating causes the air in your home to become dry, pulling moisture from your hair (and skin). And on that note, drink more water. it does a body good!
**One more thing: refrain from going outdoors with wet hair and/or putting wet hair in a pony tail. Wet hair is more prone to damage than dry hair. While it is best to allow hair to air dry, and it is far better to blow-dry than head outdoors with wet hair.

Not Boxed In
Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't be more than one thing at once.
I AM WOMAN.
I AM FEARLESS.
I AM MOTHER.
I AM BOSS.
I AM BEAUTIFUL.
I AM STRONG.
I AM CARING.
I AM FIERCE.
I AM INDEPENDENT.
I AM SUPPORTED.
I AM ME.
Who are you?
Look Back, Charge Forward
Let's get real. It's early February and I want to know how that fresh start is going for you. New years are always so exciting, full of fantastic plans and hopeful intentions. However, we all know how quickly those can fade...
A fresh restart always feels good, but the moment we fail is when we forget to look back. Evaluating what came before is so necessary. Shiny new plans are always more attractive to look at than where we've come from. But how will we know the direction to go if we haven't acknowledged the growth we've already had?
So if you're feeling a little wobbly today, starting month two of this new year with new steps forward, I encourage you to take a moment and really see where your path has lead you thus far. Only then can you make the necessary adjustments to get back on track.
Don't worry, you've got this
Let me know how you're doing in the comments below.
Where the magic happens...
I wear many hats - and not a single one defines me.
I used to feel tied to what defined a "good" (insert title) in society. #formerpeoplepleaser
It's easy to make excuses and not grow when we hide behind titles. I was a healthcare professional and SAHM, who never looked at herself as a business owner or better yet, a business owner x , a business mentor to other women and men and our son, who started his own business at the ripe age of 11.
I was also someone who wanted something of her own, started selling haircare and almost five years later, built a business that allows me to make my own investments and contribute to our family's financial goals.
Do you know how empowering that feels?
I found that when I got out of my own way, stopped the excuses around what others would think of my Monat business, stepped out from behind the titles and expectations that society deems "good" or "right," and believed in myself, freaking magic happens.
YOU CAN do that, too.
Sweat Equity + Next Steps
Nothing manifests without a little sweat equity.
I know we've been talking about goals, setting intentions and speaking words of affirmation, but I need you to hear something right now... you have to put in the work if you want to see results.
A throwback photo, but on this day, L and I were stuffing envelopes, writing messages and putting in the time to make this business work for us.
I've got plans. I've got dreams. I have a vision of the future that looks pretty amazing. But now that I see it, I know what I have to do to get there. I'm not sitting around waiting for it to happen to me.
My next step? That day it was to get these sample packets out to existing customers. Today it is send out happy mail to new customers and dive in to new business partners' plans for a sustainable home based business.
What's your next step?

2022 Team Goals
As a leader, I love seeing others on my team reach their goals - big and small - because my focus is their win.
As a leader, I see the potential in each individual on my team and teach them how to maximize what is already inside of them because we all have the tools inside of us.
Methods that work for me may not work for you. That’s the beauty of my business. I teach you how to build a sustainable business that aligns with you, your life and brings you joy. And a paycheck
I’m really excited for our team’s 2022 goals. Here are a few:
- Welcome 58 men and women to our team and show them the steps to build a sustainable income from home.
- Collectively donate a portion of our earnings to an organization.
- Continue helping men, women and kids with their hair and skin needs.
- Mountain retreat for leaders.
Are you one of the 58? If our goals create a spark inside you, I invite you to join us. Connect with me and together we’ll decide if it’s a fit for you!
Reflecting on the past year and all that I am grateful for - there have been both peaks and valleys and both are essential for growth in both my personal life and my business.
Yes, even the difficult times ... as much as I wish they didn't happen.
I feel you have to feel and move through the emotion behind both triumphs and struggles. I have felt like I didn't do enough in my personal life as a wife, mom, friend as well as in my Monat business - I felt like I didn't do enough as a leader.
I did do enough because something I know to be true is that contrast shows us what we do want and what we don't want. I found that when we embrace the peaks for all that they are and not beat ourselves up for not staying in that experience, we understand that if we lived in a constant state of peaks, life would be boring.
I also found that by loving and appreciating the peaks, cheering myself on for those achievements, I expect more of them and I know they will come.
The contrast guarantees that ✨
Letting Our Kids Lead
I have two polar opposite children. From their pregnancy to their birth to their everything. What Ryan and I thought would be their respective paths is also polar opposite. We discovered this when Nash had zero interest in sports and London had zero interest in dance.
Yes, we were the parents whose son watched the baseball go by him and said he "would like baseball if he didn't have to hit the ball and there was music in the outfield." We have been the parents whose daughter stood in the middle of her ballet class - expressionless - while the rest of the girls danced around her.
It is painful to watch your kids do something they don't want to do. We barely made it through one season of six year old baseball and just six weeks of dance. It was then that Ryan and I made a pact to let them lead. We would focus on what Nash and London expressed interest in - even if that meant Nash was in dance and London in baseball.
A true relief.
The pressures of parenthood are no joke and when your kids have different interests than the social norm, it feels magnified. Playdates are different, birthday parties are different, clothing options are different, toys are different, birthday lists, Christmas lists.. it is endless.
When I see this picture, it brings me pure joy because I see two kids who feel free to express themselves as they are and not what society deems as "normal."
And that is something I hope every parent has the chance to experience ✨
Living in gratitude
I've had a lot of growth in my life over the last few years and there have been a bucket-load of things I've learned along the way, but some of the best lessons have come as I started being truly intentional about practicing gratitude in my life. It turns out, gratitude and negative thoughts cannot co-exist.
Let me say that one more time.
Gratitude and Negative Thoughts Cannot Co-Exist.
There have been times where I've doubted myself, times where I've run the risk of burning out because I was operating out of fear. There were times when I questioned my value and what I had to bring to the table. But all those stories I latched onto... they just weren't true.
So I started making a list of all that I was grateful for. I focused on the little things first, all the things I had taken for granted, and then the big things started to become clear. And those low-value thoughts I was holding onto? They started to disappear.
Today, I'm choosing to live in gratitude. How about you?
I'd love to know what you're grateful for.
Together We can make big things happen
When I pulled this card, I had an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
Replace “me” with “our.”
On behalf of my MONAT business, I have been able to make charitable contributions because of my freaking incredible, supportive customers. They are the true MVP’s. I wouldn’t be able to do this on my own without them.
Reflecting on the various fundraisers, go fund me accounts, food drives, teacher wish lists, etc., as an Estee's VIP Lounge collective, we were able to make several impacts in 2021.
I could cry.
We have also been able to support the following organizations so far this year:
Special Olympics Minnesota
Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center
JDRF
Des Moines Swimming Federation
The Foundation for Prader-Willi Research
Animal Rescue League of Iowa
Alzheimer's Association
American Heart Association
Dress for Success Des Moines
Food Bank of Iowa
GLSEN
Anawim Housing
I encourage everyone to “like” all of these pages to help them get the word out.
Together we can make BIG things happen ✨
Taking Time to Pause
Last month I took a pause and because I have developed new connections with total strangers - turned friends - I thought I would share the social media post that co-created these relationships. I had no intentions of addressing the break at all, but I did and once again, I am shown the importance of being real + vulnerable. We are all doing the best we can. I would love to hear how you have taken time for yourself to soak in the now.
“Hi friends!
It’s been a minute since I’ve been on social media. As someone who tries to post every day and use this amazing tool to connect with my friends, my radio silence was noticed by you all. I have received an overwhelming amount of messages asking if I was ok and if I need anything. I greatly appreciate the messages and laugh when I am asked if I’m “busy working on organizing my closet?” (Baby steps ) But, yes, I am ok.
Truthfully, I needed to pause.
This life feels fast, doesn’t it? From the mama emotions at the end of the school year as we transition to Jr. High to the significant losses of loved ones to growth in my Monat business to fun news about my book to Nash’s Confections to the launch of my webinar series to everything in between - it was eventfully overwhelming for any one person.
Life, right!?
I have come such a long way in the three weeks that I intentionally stepped back. I gave focus to the parts of my life right in front of me - begging my inner peace to take priority - and could see everything won’t fall apart when I rest. We can all use a pause. The spiritual, mental and emotional clarity is priceless when we take care of ourselves.
A special thank you to my dear friend, Leah. Had she not pushed me to unapologetically take time for myself, I would 100% be burnt out. Don’t get me wrong, I had anxiety about stepping back from all that I do, but it has been one of the best decisions for myself, my family and my business.
As I lean just a little bit longer into this time, I’m feeling more inspired when I think forward to my community and business. I am excited to reconnect in a couple weeks and hear all about your lives! I’ve missed so much without browsing my feeds!”

My Kids Gave Me a Performance Review for Mother’s Day
For this month’s blog, I asked Nash + London to write a few thoughts on what Mother’s Day means to them. In truth, I half held my breath. I am an imperfect mom. Some days, my head feels like it might spin off my body and like I am barely getting our family through the day. Other days I feel like I am able to be all things to everyone at work, at home - like, wow, that was a good day (as I hang up my cape). But, after reading each of their pieces, I realized that kids see the best in us - at all times.
P.S. I just love kids’ creative brains and how they turned my name into a list of traits!
Happy Mother’s Day to all!
From Nash:
“Happy Mother’s Day!
Mother’s Day is special because it celebrates our Moms and everything they do.
My Mom has taught me the basics and processes of running a business.
She’s there when I burn something in the oven or when I need help with school work :)
Mom is always able to help, when needed.
Even when things don’t go as planned, Mom is able to have fun with what we have.
ESTEE IS A -----
Entrepreneur
Says she’s sups funny
Tells us what things need done
Enjoys family time
Enjoys music
Nash, your little SUN :)”
From London:
“Dear Mom,
Happy Mother’s day!
I think Mother’s day is specal because we celabrate all the things she does for me and Nash. Mom is really helpful in the house. She means a lot :)
Easy to ask
Soothing
Teaching peeps the right thing
Eating health stuff
Estee is awesome
P.S. She is helpful to dad too.”
How I exposed a 12 year old block to a happy life
*Potential trigger warning: the following post discusses suppressed trauma and infant illness.
Last month I attended a much needed Monat team retreat. Initially the urge to stay home was STRONG. I love being home with Ryan and the kids - like, I LOVE love it. Whether I’m reading, making room for another house plant, (albeit, sometimes forcibly making room), challenging all to a Connect Four tourney or sitting outside, it brings me great peace + joy. That said, I also have goals when it comes to my Monat business. And, reaching those goals requires growth. What I’ve come to learn is that true growth comes when you step outside your comfort zone.
On the retreat I grew in a new and unfamiliar territory - my subconscious. One of the mornings was dedicated to a hypnotherapy group session with Shane Swaney. I have never been hypnotized. Naively, the first thing I thought of was the entertainment at After Prom in high school. Despite this, I was open because I thought, “hell yes! Show me what I need to do to continue to succeed in my business.”
What came in the next 30 minutes was one of the most intense physical manifestations I’ve ever experienced. It started as pure relaxation as we made our way through the “inner house” of our subconscious. As we walked through the main level, I felt pure bliss and light as a feather. Then the hypnotherapist guided us to open the basement door. First level of the basement began uprooting the bliss I had just felt. At the second level, my heart began racing and I started to cry. By the time we were in the lowest level of the basement, I was shaking and crying. I was sobbing so hard that I couldn’t catch my breath. It had stirred a deeply held and suppressed belief from an event 12 years prior, almost to the day.
What did I see? The only image that kept flashing was Nash’s infant face as I rocked him in the ER the night we found him unresponsive + blue. Eyes closed, tubes everywhere and his body limp from pain meds. The words “you’re not enough” kept flashing through my mind. Twelve years ago, I created this belief. I told myself I was a failure as a Mom and I dealt with it all by not dealing at all. I avoided these feelings by being a busy, new Mom.
I let myself believe that by blocking out that horrible and traumatic night and believing (but not really) it wasn’t my failure as a Mom, I was “better.” But the truth, twelve years later I sat in a room full of women - a freaking mess. After our session ended, I continued sobbing as it released and feeling like I had been hit by a semi-truck yet so much lighter. I didn’t realize this was a subconscious block for me not only personally, but also, professionally. As Shane stated, “That was an intense release you experienced, it should lead to some really positive changes that will show up over the next week or two.” And it has. When I try to remember the traumatic event, it moves further and further away into my past.
Looking back, I tried to come up with a reason not to go to the retreat for a solid three weeks beforehand. Yet all the signs that I needed to go on this trip were there ... right down to the rap song that happened to play as I drove to the airport at 4:30 am. The exact song I imagine playing as I walk the Monat stage when I reach my business goals.
I share this story with you because there are a hundred times in my life and in my business where I feel scared, insecure, and straight up uncomfortable. Honestly, sometimes I stay comfortable. It’s easier. But if I can inspire you with my story, then not only have I grown from it, but you might be more likely to take a chance on those scary uncomfortable things! If you are being called to do something, and it’s way outside of your comfort zone, be assured, you will experience BIG growth.
The Mom Hustle That's Here to Stay
It’s crazy the commotion three letters - MLM - can stir up amongst people. You’d think we were talking IRS! Whether it is a mistrust of companies misinterpreted as pyramid schemes or a deep social condition to keep women earning less than their full potential, we can’t ignore this stigma and shame misassociated with Network Marketing. Thankfully, shady MLMs and pyramid schemes are becoming a thing of the past. There are stricter regulations, a focus on quality products, and improved customer experience versus the drive to recruit. And people are making serious money selling products that are making a huge positive impact in the lives of their consumers.
Various Network Marketing companies (sometimes confused for pyramid schemes) may appear one in the same at first glance, but this is far from the truth. While there are some broad strokes business structures and strategies that overlap, company culture, investment back into products and consultants and dedication to giving back to communities and nonprofit organizations can vary significantly between companies. I chose Monat Global because it was a moral match for my personal and business beliefs and goals.
Before I share why I choose Monat, let me say this - I am a smart, educated woman, who had a successful medical career prior to joining Monat. I am deeply passionate about helping others in all facets of life, but mostly, I enjoy helping them make a difference in their own lives. My Monat business is not shady or illegal. In fact, quite the opposite. I LOVE my customers. Love them. And I tell them frequently. And they love the products and outcomes. I educate first, explaining our products and sharing what sets us apart. No brand bashing because that is just gross.
I choose Monat because of their commitment to science, research, education, professionalism, and high performing products. I stay with Monat because the company speaks to my heart: their focus on gratitude, family and giving back to the community. I grow with Monat because I’ve found a village of like-minded individuals and we support one another through our businesses and through life.
Do you LOVE your hair?
Do you love your hair?
Loving your hair means something different to everyone, yes? In my youth, a bad hair day was if a piece of hair didn’t curl just right or it went flat. Flat hair was a crisis! Which is why I carried a teasing comb in my purse at.all.times. Hair thinning, change in texture, and graying didn’t happen until you’re like a grandparent, right!? For some :)
I struggled with all three by the ripe age of 33 - having my first gray hair at 27. Gradually, my full ponytail and messy bun began to thin and my hairline started receding. My concern peaked when I could pile up a wad of hair after every brushing. After my doctor ordered labs and exams, the only thing to report was that my hormone levels were a little low. Not remarkably low, like I was expecting to hear.
I began cleaning up my nutrition and got to the point I was in the best physical shape of my life. When I look back at photos from that time, my hair has changed so much for the better. From the continued growth to reduced hair fall to the shine and vitality, my hair’s health is off the chain - really. I even have people ask if they “can pet my hair.” Ha! Now THAT is a first since switching my hair products.
I suppose a bad hair day could be many things for me, but when I can see and feel a difference in the overall health + vitality, I judge my hair less and spend more time loving it!
Top Three Foods for Wellness
After my son was born, I found it more difficult to find easy-to-grab meals. To get through the mid-morning and afternoon energy slumps that motherhood brought, smoothies became a convenient remedy. Truthfully, nutrition wasn’t a priority up to this point, but this time became the beginning of my wellness journey.
Here are my top three foods to eat for wellness:
- Dark, leafy veggies. Spinach + kale my favorite because they are full of pure goodness that works together for a healthy scalp + mane. Leafy greens also help keep hair moisturized so it won’t break.
- Orange fruits + veggies. Sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe and mangoes are my go-to’s. The beta-carotene in them is turned into Vitamin A, which helps protect against dry, dull hair.
- Fish, seeds, nuts. Salmon, tuna, chia seeds and walnuts are a staple for me. A vegan option that I also love is tofu, which is rich in keratin.
Good or bad, everything you eat can be detected in your hair and nails. Turns out you ARE actually what you eat! https://www.healthgrades.com/right-care/skin-hair-and-nails/the-8-best-foods-for-your-skin-hair-and-nails
Here is my go-to smoothie recipe. I will throw in a scoop of Total Greens found here: https://mymonat.com/shop/products/total-greens if I am on the go. They are the Monat Greens, but I used to use the Alkamind Greens. They can be found here: https://www.getoffyouracid.com/collections/daily-greens/products/daily-greens-naked
The important part is finding quality greens! I invest my time in finding quality products that I love before I share with others.
